Trash to Treasure - Paper Mache Bins

By Grace keller May 28, 2015
Hi, my name is Grace Keller and my mom publishes Macaroni Kid JoCo. When I am not playing soccer, I like to do crafts, cook and play with my dog.

I will be writing this article, Trash to Treasure, every other week. My articles will share fun and easy crafts you can do at home with recyclable materials. My first craft is called Paper Mache Bins.

Materials:
  • plastic clam shell containers (they usually hold strawberries and blueberries or are used for takeout food boxes).
  • black and white newspapers
  • regular colored tissue paper
  • white craft glue
  • scissors
  • container to mix in
  • small paintbrush
  • stirring stick

Instructions:

Step 1: cut the top and bottom of the container apart
. Use the bottom part.

Step 2: cut or tear the newspaper into about 1 inch wide strips. The length depends on how big your clam shell is. It doesn't have to be exact.

Step 3: mix one part water and three parts glue together.pour it in a container that your strips can fit into easily.

Step 4: dip your strip in the mixture.Make sure it is covered copletely in the mixture. To get rid of any extra glue hold the strip between 2 fingers and squeeze it all off.then put it on the clam shell the way you choose.

Tip: press down harder on the strips for a better result.

Step 5: your bin should be covered in several layers. Let bin dry.

Step 6: tear the tissue paper into pieces about the size of a tortilla chip. Dip the brush in the glue and stick on the paper. You will need several layers of this too. Let dry.

I hope you enjoyed my craft! See you next time and don't forget, one man's trash is another man's treasure!
