This time of year is all about transitions. Routines change, school starts and after school activities and homework begin. Change can be exciting as well as exhausting. It takes time for everyone in a family to adjust to change even when it’s something exciting like beginning the new school year. Change can be uncomfortable for kids and adults because moving from something familiar to something unfamiliar can feel scary. This process can feel a lot like trying on a new shoe. Our old shoes are familiar and comfortable whereas a new shoe at first can feel unfamiliar, tight and awkward. With time and patience that new shoe can begin to feel better.
Tips for Managing Change and Transition:
- Changes are inevitable and allow everyone in the family to learn how to adapt to new situations.
- Adjusting to new situations and routines takes time. Reassure your family that things will get easier. Your optimism will be reassuring.
- Talk with your family about the changes that are occurring this month and help them to predict and anticipate challenges that may arise.
- Regular meals and extra sleep can be critical in helping to manage transitions and cope with change.
- Surround yourself with people who understand that change can be stressful.
- Adopting a light, understanding attitude when challenges occur will help you and your family understand that bumps are to be expected and that things will smooth out with time and practice!
