Green Meadows Park - Overland Park

By Lacy Carpenter - Field Writer May 23, 2018

Green Meadows Park is a park I knew nothing about before going. I was looking for a park in the area I was going to be in so I pulled up the Overland Park, Kansas Parks and Rec website. Green Meadows Park, let’s explore! At first, I was not sure Google maps took me to the correct spot. It dropped me off in a cul-de-sac in an Overland Park neighborhood. Well, I said I wanted an adventure, so we got out of the car and made our way down the path.

Green Meadows Park is a great park if you are looking for more than just a playground.

This park is almost 18 acres and has a 0.66-mile trail. The playground is not near any parking, you should prepare to walk a bit before getting to the playground. That makes this the perfect park to break up a walk or a bike ride. Because of this Green Meadows Park is not the ideal park for a quick park stop if you are hoping to hit up the playground.

Green Meadows Park is perfect for exploring nature.

While it is not a great spot for a quick playground stop, it is a wonderful spot for exploring nature. One of the first things we met on the trail was a creek. We jumped from rock to rock, looked for bugs and frogs, and threw sticks into the water. There are trees and meadows to run and play in. Bring your butterfly net and catch some bugs. Bring binoculars and watch for birds. We had so much fun playing in nature that we almost did not need to walk to the playground.

There is a playground.

I said "almost" right? Of course, we still went to the playground. While there is a baby swing, I would say this playground is better suited for preschool and up. The equipment here is more on the steep side of playgrounds. There are a couple slides and things to climb on. There are also benches, that way after your walk or bike to the playground you get a chance to rest while your kids play.

It has a picnic spot.

Again, this park is fairly spread out. There is one shelter with picnic tables, but it is not close to the playground. The pro to this is you can have a picnic in a park even if you don’t have the time to spend playing on the playground after. Your kids won’t be begging you for five more minutes on the slide because they cannot see the playground from the picnic shelter. The con is if you kids finish their picnic at different times you can’t really just send them to the playground as they finish, it is a bit of a walk from the shelter to the playground.

Green Meadows Park is located at 15401 Beverly Court in Overland Park, KS.
