Roe Park - Overland Park

By Lacy Carpenter - Field Writer June 11, 2018

This week I loaded up the boys and went to Roe Park, again. This park is awesome and it took me two trips to be able to fully write the review. To give you an idea of the age group I have experienced this park with we went with groups that included everything between babies to kindergartners. Sunscreen up those kids because each time we ended up spending about three hours here!

Roe Park has a splash pad.

If you have been to Roe Park the splash pad is probably what drew you there. I have heard so much about the splash pad that I did not even realize there were other elements to this park! The splash pad has several spray and fountain features. It is a lot of fun and the perfect place to cool off on a hot day. There are benches and two shelters within view of the water so caregivers can watch without getting wet if they want to. Personally, the days we went were so hot that I enjoyed cooling off a little too. A bonus to all of this, that has surprised each mom I met there, was that it is all free!

Roe Park has a large nature play area.

If you have read my other park reviews you know I love nature play areas. This one is one of the largest I have seen so far. The first time we went the kids spent about 90% of their time here. One of the things I appreciated about it is there were water elements here as well. With one non-walker on a hot day, this was a great place where she could sit and play to keep cool. Bring along some sand toys because this is a great area to build a sand castle. There are stumps to play on and logs to balance on. There is even a little hut built from sticks. The favorite spot of our group was a water pump that went into a log trough T and took the water down the hill. Come prepared for the kids to get a little messy in this area. There is sand and, with all the water play, plenty of mud as well.

There is a small playground.

If you have younger kids you will love this. There is a tiny playground made especially for toddlers. It is low to the ground and they can do it all on their own. Right near it are the baby swings. So if baby swings are a must have for your park outing you are good to go at Roe park!

Roe Park has a unique playground.

This is the area that I have found mix opinions on from parents. As a mom of a preschooler that loves to climb, I thought this playground was awesome. It has a tall playground with a lot of things to climb on and up. The parents of toddlers that I have talked to hate it for this same reason. If you have a toddler consider yourself warned. The playground is large and right there in the center. Chances are your child is going to want to go over to it. That might mean you will have to climb up the equipment yourself to help them down. There were also some fun spinning toys and a modern version of merry go round equipment. There were also some larger unique swings in that area, one even looks like a hammock. Roe Park is a park that has a little something for everyone and the playground area is something the older kids will appreciate too.

They have all the amenities.

Roe Park has all the amenities that parents want. There are clean bathrooms, drinking fountains, a big parking lot, multiple shelters and picnic tables, and plenty of benches. Even when it was crowded we had no problem finding a spot to have our snack or finding shade when we needed some. They even had tiny tables and the kids loved having their food at their own little picnic table. The other positive of a park with so many wonderful amenities is there are lots of other parents and kids. Your kids will find someone to play with and you might even find another adult to talk to too.

Roe Park has even more than all this.

After two long visits I know there are things we did not get to do. I thought they were still worth noting in case your family might enjoy them. There is another playground away from the splash pad area, across the large parking lot. If you need a chance to get away from the crowd it seems like that would be a great spot to go. There are also tennis courts, soccer fields, and softball fields. They also note on their website that this park is ADA accessible.
