Garrett Park - Shawnee, Kansas

By Lacy Carpenter - Field Writer June 25, 2018

We went to Garrett Park this week, a Shawnee Parks & Recreation Park. This is actually one of the parks we frequent. It is a great location. We have never been there and experienced a crowd, but we have also never been and not found a new friend to play with either.  This week I took two preschoolers. We met our friends that had a preschooler and an elementary school-aged child. Also, freeze pops came. I mean, like a lot of ice pops because it is hot out there.

Garrett Park is full of amenities.

This is a park you can plan to spend a good amount of time playing at if that is what you are looking for. Garrett Park has all the basic amenities. They have a large parking lot. There is a shelter with plenty of picnic tables and shade. Shade is pretty much a must for our park outings right now. Did I mention it is HOT?! There are benches for mom and dad to rest and watch the kids play on the playground. They also have clean bathrooms and a drinking fountain.

It is a park for all ages.

Garrett Park has a good size playground that I would say is accommodating for a wide range of ages. Everyone in our group was happy. There were both baby swings and big swings. There is a big slide and there is also a little slide. There are easy ways up and there are also more challenging climbs. There is also a zip line. The zip line is really cool for the preschool ages and up. They love zipping back and forth. Parents of younger kids though, you have been warned, your toddler is going to love zipping back and forth as well, but they will not be able to reach on their own.

If you have teenagers this is a park where you can have fun with them too. There is a walking/biking path that goes through the park. There is also a basketball court and baseball field. Bring your sports equipment and have fun with your entire family!

Learn Kansas history at Garrett Park.

I think it is great when you get to learn something while also having fun at a park. While you are visiting stop and take a look at the stone house that was built in 1876. There is a sign there that gives a brief explanation of the house and the Garrett brothers who built it. There is some interesting information and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn some Shawnee and Kansas history.

If you would like to visit Garrett Park you will find it at 22325 W 47th St, Shawnee, Kansas 66226
