Cirque du Soleil Crystal Kansas City

A Macaroni Kid Review

By By By Heather Blum- assistant publisher of Macaroni Kid Southeast Kansas City January 17, 2019

Our family had the opportunity to attend opening night of Cirque du Soleil Crystal in Kansas City.  It was an absolutely amazing show that will delight and amaze all ages! My husband and I, along with our three kids, ages 12, 11 and 9, left astounded at the talents and abilities of the performers on, and above, the ice.  Yes, the show is all done on ice, a unique twist to Cirque du Soleil!

The show has beauty, excitement, wonder, suspense and even moments of laughter. Cirque du Soleil Crystal follows a young woman, Crystal, who is seeking self discovery as she finds herself in a fantasy world of wonder, questions and even answers.  The stunts, that vary from beautiful to those that leave your jaw dropping, vary in variety as well. On ice stunts add a layer of suspense to each twist, leap and balancing act.  Notice the ramps at various heights in the picture?  Not only will you watch performers leap from those, they will bring in many more ramps, platforms and items for suspension!  Not all acts were on the ice, there were many elements that happened above the ice, including several of my personal favorites!  The lights, music and costumes take you through various places of wonder with so much depth and intensity. The animated projections transform the ice into places of color, motion and new locations, as the story progresses.

Want some tips on getting there, where to park and other things to expect?  The show is held in downtown Kansas City, at the beautiful Sprint center.   This place is a hub for great shows, sports games and many other events! Everything we experienced was handled efficiently and it was easy to get in and out.  We were able to park in one of the nearby parking garages, which cost us $15 for event parking. Expect to be at the show for about two hours total, with a 20 minute intermission.  There are lots of great places around the area to eat and extend your time in downtown KC.   The Sprint center is located on the east side of the Power & Light District so you will find yourself in the hub of all of the excitement of KC.

The show is described as "a new kind of performance as Cirque du Soleil meets the ice to defy all expectations".  Our family would certainly agree that it "defied expectations" and left us with a desire for more!

Cirque Du Soleil will only be in Kansas City January 16-20th, with a total of seven performances during those five days, so be sure to get your tickets while you can.
