Let’s Quit Our Resolutions, TODAY!

By Jen Rhodes-: Co-Owner of Snap Fitness Shawnee and Basehor, Founder of the Phenix Method January 13, 2022

Yep, I said it.  We’re quitting the resolution-mentality!  It no longer serves us.

Luckily, National Quitters Day is January 17th, so this message is timed perfectly for us to DITCH THIS ALL OR NOTHING mentality.

1. Resolutions send your subconscious the wrong message.

How long have you been thinking, REALLY thinking, about tackling this goal, FOR GOOD? "That's it.... once XYZ is over, I'll start." Herein lies the problem. Your subconscious mind truly knows how important this is to you. You’ve thought about it for days, weeks, months, YEARS. Waiting and/or quitting on it will only send mixed signals.

Here’s another way to look at this reasoning:  Your child wants to try out for their respective sport team. They talk about it all the time. "Mom, once I make the team, everything will be awesome!" And when it comes time to practice they put it off, or worse, QUIT.

Wait, what?!?

Yep. Exact same reaction is happening in your subconscious.

2. Decide that this is an intention, not a resolution.

Let's talk a little more on mindset here. As a society, our own definition of resolution has turned into something "short-term." Fleeting with the falling snow and warming temperatures.

Instead, let's make this part of your identity. It’s what you do.  Does this mean 2 hours a day? DEAR GOD NO. But an intention is set. This becomes a part of your future dna.

In yoga, I encourage my students to set an intention for the next 55 minutes. Start there. Keep the appointment with yourself DAILY and set the intention. In our program, Clients are encouraged to lift 4 days a week within their program, and to move with intention, daily.  This can be as simple as taking a walk, foam rolling, or even super fun dance party with your littles. Intentional movement begins to rewire your brain chemically and over time you'll crave that mind-body connection.

3. Creating momentum is the only way we’re going to change, truly.

The holidays are over.  The excitement of the promise of a new year.

“THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT!!!!” only to wind up in the doldrums of January, kids back in school, wait, this is harder than I thought it would be!

BOOM.  You’re stuck.

Why?  Well, to put it easily:  you made it too dang hard!

So let’s play some defense here! Lifting Max four days a week, get your steps, throw in some veggies, and for Gods' sake drink more water!  Now, if you love a good 4 mile run …. Do it! ;-)  But no extra burpees, or hours on the bike, nothing crazy - our goal is Balance.

What’s your plan?  Then PLAN IT!

4. Exercise will boost your energy to tackle more!

Who doesn't love a little boost of confidence? Uh, ME! Imagine all the energy you build when you're consistently exercising! Don't even get me started on how much "HELL YES" can come out of a great leg day (instant mood booster!) now, let's throw that confidence toward upcoming spring gatherings and all the hooplah-energy and confidence are Vital here!

5. One good habit will lead to another.

One book I always recommend to my evolution clients is Atomic Habits by James Clear. I've read it a couple of times, and to you-know-who I lent my copy to, don't worry, I bought another.  HAHA!

Habit stacking is a great practice he speaks of: "After (current habit), I will (insert new habit)." Habit stacking increases the likelihood that you stick with a habit by stacking one new behavior on top of the old one."

  • After I brush my teeth in the morning, I will meditate for 10 Minutes.
  • If I wash my face at night, I will then read for 10 minutes.
  • After I eat lunch at work, I will get 500 steps.
  • If I leave my desk for lunch, I will feel more calm digesting my food.

See how easy that would be to insert into your morning?  Simple.  And trust me, we have time.  But we’ll leave that digital detox for another day….

About Jen Rhodes, Co-Owner of Snap Fitness Shawnee and Basehor, Founder of the Phenix Method

"After the birth of my 1st child, I had about 85 pounds to lose. To make matters worse, I felt like a little fish in a big pond at my gym. I had no idea where to start, and was too terrified to ask for help. I (FINALLY!) took a leap of faith and hired a trainer. The results inspired me so much I got my personal training certification too.

In the last 18 years, I've made it my purpose to move and motivate with intention, but it wasn't until I truly understood the psychology and mental programming that needed undoing that I was able to shatter all of my limiting beliefs and completely transform my mind, body, and spirit! Now is the time to commit to your own complete evolution!

Are you looking for another quick fix, or are you ready for a complete change for the rest of your life? No burpees, fads, pills, two-a-days, are in this program.

This is a CUSTOM, 360-degree approach program guaranteed to get you to your goal and teach you how to never yo-yo diet again! I will work with your own psychology attacking the myth of "emotional eating" and "exercise as therapy.""
